Crockett High School’s AVID program just broke its yearly milestone. They have met, and
surpassed the astonishing $3 million goal and is predicted to reach $4 million before the
end of the school year.
Of all the students, two stand out for the sheer amount of money they have received.
Christian Romero, whose hard work has gained him $419,600 in scholarships, followed closely
by Iliyana Castro who through effort amassed $415,600.
Although the road to success was not easy, the most major challenge was that this year the
FAFSA website was malfunctioning and not allowing kids to sign up, which delayed them into February. This is a problem due to the fact FAFSA can open doors to be able to get
Federal Student Loans, State and Institutional Scholarships, and Federal Work-Study programs.
Yet, with determination and patience Crockett High School students were able to overcome this
problem and still surpass their goal.
Senior AVID teacher Hannah Chapa said the student did all the work
“I feel amazing, like an imposter. It was the kids, it was not me at all. The teachers can only do so much; we tell them and show them the opportunities, but it really takes up to the student if they really want to do and try”, Chapa said.
With around 100 seniors enrolled in the AVID program this year, the results speak volumes. A remarkable 90% of these students have already received acceptance letters from their preferred colleges or schools, truly showing the effectiveness of the AVID program.
